the colourful 80s

The 1980s were all about big hair, neon colours, big earrings and just about everything that was loud and oozing creativity of that decade. Some famous 1980s trends were such styles as shoulder pads and miniskirts for women, and parachute pants for the men.

While some owe the fashion trends of the 1980’s to Madonna we couldn’t help but heart the styles seen in movies like – Dirty Dancing, Top Gun & Grease !

The 80’s decoded

Shoulder pads: These may very well be the most decade-defining of the top 10 80s fashion fads 🙂

Miniskirts: The shorter the better … women and girls loved miniskirts. Denim was the most popular, but miniskirts were made in a number of other materials including knit and leather. These were often paired with leggings.

Huge Chunky Earrings : It seemed like everything in the 1980s was about ‘the bigger the better’ 😉

Acid wash jeans: The acid washed jeans trend didn’t become popular until the mid to late eighties and faded four to five years later. This trend seemed to go hand in hand with the big hair phenomenon of the late 80s.

Neons and pop colours: Clothes in the eighties had a tendency to go bright. One such trend was neon coloured clothes (although they were called fluorescent at that time). These eighties fashions for women would make you wear your sunglasses at night 🙂

Oversized tops: Last, but not least, the 80s fashion fad of oversized tops. Big sweaters, sweatshirts and t-shirts were totally hot and wearing them over a miniskirt or a pair of leggings made them even hotter. These tops were most often belted with big and gaudy, low slung belts with the top bloused over the belt.

The eighties was a decade when many of the fashion trends that people love to hate were created. Hope you enjoyed the stroll down memory lane 🙂
